"We couldn't be more pleased than to continue our long-standing relationship with the greatest surfer …

Jeff Spicoli Tries to Smuggle Weed on Surfboard

In an area that has become a hotbed of drug ttrafficking, pro surfer Jeff Spicoli was arrested after trying to smuggle in 24 pounds of marijuana Sunday morning while paddling in to Imperial Beach on his surfboard. The Border Patrol, who made the arrest, said Spicoli threw a blue duffel bag in the ocean when he was ordered to come ashore.  Border Patrol agents had to go into the water to tak…

Grant “Twiggy” Baker: A BNQT Exclusive

When the Billabong XXL Awards were telecast on ESPN last week, one particular name stood out: Twiggy. As in Grant “Twiggy” Baker, one of the top big wave chargers in the world and winner of both the Best Male Overall Performance and Biggest Wave Awards. I caught up with Twiggy shortly after interviewing Twiggy's friend and fellow award winner Greg Long the morning …

Battle of the Power Rankings: Round 2

May 29, 2009

When Lewis Samuels was let go by Surfline, it was assumed that his infamous Power Rankings would go with him. The assumption was half-right; while Lewis’ Power Rankings are posted on his site PostSurf.com, Surfline decided to keep the Power Rankings going on their site as well. Now we have two different sets of ASP Power Rankings, similar to the dual polls we see in college athletics. So n…

Cast Your Votes for Who Should Compete at the U.S. Open

May 28, 2009

By: Cyrus

Despite the fact that the U.S. Open of Surfing has hands-down the worst waves in the history of six-star WQS events, the prestige is still intact because of the weather, attendance and location. And to add to the circus atmosphere, the U.S. Open is allowing fans to cast their votes for who should compete in the U.S. Open’s all-star festivities. In addition to Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning,…

Bobby Martinez Wins Billabong Pro Teahupoo

Bobby Martinez, who still remains sponsorless, knocked out Taj Burrow in the finals of the Billabong Pro Teahupoo to claim his second World Tour win at Tahiti, and the fourth World Tour victory of his career.   "I feel great and a bit emotional," said Martinez.  "I feel wonderful.  I waited for the good ones out there and just got lucky.  There weren't too many waves and I was…

Kelly Slater Out at Billabong Pro Teahupoo

May 19, 2009

It’s looking more and more likely that Kelly Slater will not be winning World Title #10 this year. For the third straight contest, Slater was knocked out of the second round, this time by current ASP World #39 Aritz Aranburu. With three consecutive 17th place finishes, it’s unknown if Slater will compete in next month’s Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro in Brazil. “That …

Surfer Saves Drowning Kangaroo

Surfer Saves Drowning Kangaroo

May 18, 2009

Thought I'd share a feel-good story to brighten the mood of surf fans bummed because of the poor conditions down in Teahupoo.  A 48 year-old Aussie named Neil McCallum was taking a morning stroll along Kirra Beach when he noticed a young kangaroo diving into the ocean to go for a swim. Concerned about a pair of hammerhead sharks spotted recently in the same area, McCallum kept an eye on the yo…

Pro Surfers are Pretty Spoiled

Pro Surfers are Pretty Spoiled

May 14, 2009

I have to hand it to the folks over at Disney.  The surf section of their action sports site is pure garbage, second only to The Daily Stoke, who takes the cake for the worst surf website on the planet.  However, for once, Disney's surf crew actually broke a story, and it's a pretty good one.   The ASP had a semi-secret meeting with most of the ASP World Tour's top 45 du…

Burrow, C.J. Hobgood Advance in Nasty Conditions at Billabong Pro Teahupoo

May 14, 2009

Despite conditions that included a constant shift in wind and swell, the Billabong Pro Teahupoo squeezed in eight heats to complete round one and part of round two. Taj Burrow and C.J. Hobgood were among the heavy hitters to advance to round three. Ace Buchan Burrow scored the day's highest heat total, finishing with a 15.33 to combo Marlong Lipke and easily advance to round three. Totino's Field Notes

Totino's Field Notes - Road to the 2010 US Open of Snowboarding. It's been an interesting year for Totino's team riders Danny Davis and Mason Aguirre. After starting strong in the Fall and early season, with great contest results at the Totino's Open in Breckenridge, both riders suffered injuries. Danny is out for the year, but Mason recently came back and plans to throw down at next week's US Open of Snowboarding in Stratton, VT.
