Day 1 of the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Search surf contest began today, November 1, in pounding beach break. Hosted at Ocean Beach near San Francisco, the ASP's top competitors had their hands full dealing with the shifty conditions. That and sightings of Great White sharks. For Kelly Slater it proved to be no biggie - the 10x World Champ won his first heat soundly. He needs only to win tomorrow's round 2 heat to cinch his 11th world title. All photos courtesy Rip Curl.
