Even though the Naval Base Ventura Country Point Mugu contest literally defines what an amateur surf contest is given that anyone can compete provided they pay a fee, the fact that Dane Reynolds rarely wins surf contests makes this newsworthy. While winning may have been Reynolds’ secondary motivation given his first was surfing Point Mugu, a break that is only available to military personnel with the exception of this contest, victory was probably a very satisfactory moment for Reynolds who has never won an ASP event.
"It's one of my favorite waves that I've ever surfed," Reynolds told the Ventura County Star. "It's a pleasure just to get to surf here for the weekend, especially with only four people out in your heats and stuff. That's the main attraction I feel like for this event."
Approximately 7,500 spectators took advantage of the rare access to enjoy the event. Congratulations to Dane Reynolds for winning the Naval Base Ventura County Point Mufu contest. Photos credited to Channel Islands Surfboards, William Sharp and the Ventura County Star.
