The weather Saturday was thoroughly uncooperative for the longest and most action packed day of Winter X.
Shaun White won his 8th Winter X Games Gold in Slopestyle, making him the most decorated athlete in Winter X history. White was the only competitor to attempt the channel gap which he did with an incredibly difficult backside 720, the physics of which are simply mind-bogglingScotty Lago took second with two solid runs and Mikkel Bang used his final run to eek out a bronze. “It was unreal,†said White. “I missed out on a gold medal the past two years, so to win it was awesome.â€Â
In women’s slopestyle, Great Britain’s Jenny Jones used the final run of the day to best Spencer O’Brien who finished second. “On my last run I knew what I had wasn’t enough, so I had to lay down the 720,†Jones said. Megan Ginter rounded out the top three.
Nate Holland won his fourth consecutive X Games Gold in SnowboardX. He spent much of the race behind second and third place finishers Grahan Watanabe and Stian Sivertzen but made his move expertly around a tight turn.
In women’s SnowboardX Lindsey Jacobellis won handedly nabbing her fifth X Games Gold in the event. Helene Olafsen and and Sandra Frei finished second and third respectively.
In Snowmobile Snocross, Tucker Hibbert dominated. He lead the entire 20-lap race and came in 36 seconds ahead of Robbie Malinoski. This is Hibbert’s third consecutive gold in Snocross. If there was a surprise in the event it was third place finisher Dan Ebert who expressed his surprise at the post event press conference. “If someone had said you are going to go to Aspen and win a medal – I never would have fathomed it. I looked up to these guys growing up, so to be on the podium with them is amazing.â€Â
Women’s Ski Slopestyle was marred by heavy snow and an injury to pipe champion Sarah Burke who was carted off in a stretcher. Anna Berg used the first run of the day to post a winning score of 85.00. As conditions worsened, several skiers looked happy just to finish their runs. Grete Eliassen and Kaya Turski dealt with the conditions admirably taking second and third respectively. “It was scary to ride because it was the X Games and we had to do it,†sadi Anna Segal. “Even though I’m happy I won, Sarah’s fall put a bitter sweet tone on the entire event.â€Â
In the final event of the evening, Ski Big Air, Simon Dumont bested Jon Olssn with a massive double frontflip. Big Air events are judged entirely by fan voting and although Dumont’s double frontflip was far less difficult than Olssen’s “Olsson-flip 1080,†the fans voted in favor of Dumont. “This is such a great night for Big Air Skiing,†Dumont said. “I was so excited to go up against Jon with 100% fan voting. I thought the double-front flip would get it done and thanks to the fans, it did.â€Â
