Alexis Sablone on her way to gold.Venice Beach hosted the third and final Supergirl Jam event last weekend. With over 80,000 lbs of imported snow on a 20-foot tall course, the Supergirl crew transformed sunny Southern California into a mini-winter wonderland for the Snowboard Rail Jam. The day also saw Skateboard Street and Inline Skating Best Trick competitions, with 50 female athletes participating.
The top competitors of the day were Alexis Sablone (New York, NY) in Skateboard Street, Danyale Patterson (Anchorage, AK) in Snowboard Rail Jam, and Fallon Heffernana (Jacksonville Beach, FL) in Inline. They were draped in the hot pink Supergirl cape and awarded a $5,000 prize purse.
The Snowboard comp was the biggest crowd-pleaser as groups of swimsuit-clad passers-by stopped in to check out the snow. Two-year defending champ Laurie Currier (Wrightwood, CA) started off with a bang, but ended up with bronze. Danyale Patterson came out on top after dominating the rail and box obstacles.
"I am shocked!" said Patterson. "I got sixth place last year and there's so many more girls here this year, so I am really surprised. This feels great."
Desiree Melancon (Riverside, CA) took home the silver and an extra $1000 for best trick with a Front 180/Switch 5-0/Switch Back 180 Out.
In Inline, Fallon Heffernan pulled some crazy tricks, and even repositioned the course obstacles. She moved a quarter-pipe to sit beneath a basketball hook and stunned the crowd by performing a Wallride to 180 off the basketball backboard. The trick landed Heffernan her first gold after medaling in previous Supergirl Jam comps.
"I saw all of the girls riding the rails, but rails are not my specialty," said Heffernan. "I knew I had to do something that's more my style. I had a little trouble with one of my wheels early in the session, and by the time it was fixed, the session was almost over, so I had to go big. I saw the quarter-pipe and the backboard and knew what I had to do. Even if I didn't medal it would have been okay because I wanted to do it. It was my expression of creativity. I just fed off the fans' cheers and went for it. It feels amazing to finally win!"
In Skateboard Street, 2010 X Games skateboard street gold medalist Alexis Sablone dominated the competition and also won Best Trick with a Front Boardslide down a Handrail.
"So many girls were out there hitting the obstacles hard," said Sablone. "But I try not to worry about them. I just do the tricks I know I can do well. I got third last year and the best trick, but I wanted to win. I'm really glad I got both titles this year."
Rounding out the podium were Racine Reinhard (Colorado Springs, CO) with the silver and newcomer Jessica Florencio (Sao Paulo, Brazil) with bronze.
The competitions weren't the only attractions down in Venice. There were also guest appearances from Olympic gold medalist and World Champion gymnast Nastia Liukin, starts of the new Warner Bros. TV series Hellcats, Aly Michalka and Robbie Jones, and motocross star of MTV's Nitro Circus, Jolene Van Vugt.
