Street Beat: Saturdays Surf NYCPhoto: Saturdays Surf
Saturdays Surf NYC co-founders Colin Tunstall,
Morgan Collett and Josh Rosen.
Set off in the suave setting of SoHo, New York, Saturdays Surf NYC is a unique surf boutique with a strong following. It's really one of a kind, and something only the right coast could pull off. Want a latte while perusing the latest Matuse wetties? Saturdays Surf can make it happen.

Recently, the 3 creative minds behind Saturdays Surf decided to launch an apparel collection. The idea was to satisfy a demand for clothing that translates from the surf to the city. Summer 2010 marked the first capsule menswear collection and Spring / Summer 2011 is en route. Colin Tunstall was happy to fill me in on the latest. Enjoy!

BNQT - CAN YOU GIVE US THE BACKGROUND ON SATURDAYS SURF? HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH A SURF BOUTIQUE, AND WHAT'S THE STORY ON THE NAME?

Colin - Saturdays was opened in the Summer of 2009 by Josh Rosen, Morgan Collett and myself Colin Tunstall. Josh was an athlete in the snowboard industry in Seattle, moved to NYC to see what the big city had to offer and ended up working in the fashion biz for 6 years. Morgan Collett is from Newport Beach CA; he grew up in the heart of the surf industry. After studying design in Florence, IT he moved to NYC in the spring of 2006 to become the North American Sales Manager for ACNE. Colin Tunstall is an art director and has worked for publications such as, New York Magazine, GQ and Esquire.

For our name we were thinking of something positive. Who doesn't love Saturdays? Also it was a day we more often found ourselves in the water.

Saturdays Surf's initial collection is a hybrid of
living, working and playing in New York City.

BNQT - SATURDAYS SURF LAUNCHED ITS FIRST APPAREL COLLECTION IN SUMMER 2010. HOW MANY PIECES DOES THE LINE INCLUDE AND WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR IT?

Colin - Our Summer 2010 Collection is 106 pieces including tee-shirts. The inspiration is a hybrid of living, working and playing in New York City. Our most important detail was a good fit.

Tanks have been selling like crazy on the retail
front. Saturdays Surf has you covered.

BNQT - WHO IS SATURDAYS SURF'S IDEAL CONSUMER?

Colin - I think one our proudest achievements is the community we've developed. Our customers are all different but find a common bond either from surfing, being interested in surfing or just the vibe of the store and the energy it produces. New York is such a global hub, so on any day we'll have customers from all over the world and people that grew up a block away.

The Rockaway boardshort

BNQT - I READ THE INITIAL COLLECTION WAS FOUNDED ON THE ENDURING BOARDSHORT. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE BOARDSHORTS YOU OFFER?

Colin - Our Boardshorts have a classic feel. We were having a hard time finding a boardshort that had the fit and durability and comfort for surfing. We didn't want to go to long or too short. Inspired by bold color blocking.

The Collett, perfect for summer nights in Montauk.

BNQT - I LOVE THE SIMPLICITY OF THE STRIPED COLLETT PULLOVER; IT SEEMS LIKE THE PERFECT ANSWER TO LAYERING IN FALL. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH IT?

Colin - We loved that fabric. It's a great ivory color with classic blue stripes. We wanted it to be something you could wear on colder summer nights out in Montauk but still feel open and airy.

The Flash TeePhoto: Saturdays Surf
The Flash tee: simple yet Saturdays

BNQT - THE BACKSLASH IS A WELL-KNOWN ASPECT OF THE SATURDAYS LOGO. HOW DID SUCH A SIMPLE CHARACTER BECOME STRONG ENOUGH TO LIVE BY ITSELF ON THE FLASH TEE AND SLASH TANK?

Colin - I wanted to make something bold and memorable. It's a little punk rock and minimalistic clean at the same time. Kind of takes the same shape of a surfboard fin without being a fin.

The JacksonPhoto: Saturdays Surf
The Jackson shirt, unexpected but tasteful.

BNQT - FINALLY, ALL SURFERS NEED TO DRESS UP ON OCCASION. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE JACKSON AND OLIVER SHIRTS?

Colin - We make clothes we want to wear. Weather it's a simple basic or something that's just a little extra or unexpected but tasteful.
