Brunstetter, in 35mm film
Goldcoast Longboards is a skateboard company based in Salt Lake City which brings a refreshing sense of artistic style into their products. Their boards provide the journey, their 35mm SLR camera documents it. At its core, Goldcoast is a group of people that have been on one sort of board or another for 20 years.
Their mantra says it all: "Travel, Skate, Discover Cool Things, Bring Lots of Film and Use It."

Goldcoast boards - the Pier and the Venice
A fan of expedition and panache, I knew I needed to hit up Goldcoast for the inside scoop. Chris Brunstetter, Goldcoast Longboards Marketing Director, was happy to answer my questions. Enjoy!

BNQT - CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE DIFFERENT GOLDCOAST COLLECTIONS AND HOW THEY DISTINGUISH FROM ONE ANOTHER?

The Rat, featuring Goldcoast MACTRAC technology
Chris - Goldcoast has three collections; the Heritage, Form and Focus Series. The Heritage Series is all about things that have or are influencing our skateboarding. For 2010, we looked in our garages and saw that our friends who we skate with were also working on cars or motorcycles, so the Heritage Series has a very "motor head" feel. The Form Series is based around hand-drawn and hand-painted artwork. The Focus Series is all photography based. We love the look and feel of shooting film rather than digital, so we use film wherever possible.
BNQT - THE MACTRAC IS A NEW CUSTOMIZATION FEATURE GOLDCOAST OFFERS. WHAT IS IT AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Goldcoast product matrix
Chris - The MACTRAC is an adjustable wheelbase system that enables you to change the ride of your board for your specific style. If you want to have a more stable ride, you mount the trucks wider. If you want a more nimble, responsive ride, simply bring the trucks in. The MACTRAC gives you a total of three inches of play for your wheel base, so one board can have the riding characteristics of several.
BNQT - WHERE DOES GOLDCOAST DERIVE ITS INSPIRATION?
That's a tough one. If we had to narrow it down, I'd say our brand is built around four points of inspiration: skateboarding in all its forms, skate culture, film photography and travel. Most of our ideas come from getting out in the world, finding cool things, skateboarding, and taking pictures of all of it.

The Heavy Pile, shag carpet and all
BNQT - GOLDCOAST USES SOME KILLER GRAPHICS. TO YOU, HOW INTERTWINED IS ART WITH SKATEBOARDING AND VICE VERSA?
Chris - I think creative people and skateboarding are naturally drawn to one another. Skateboarding is an individual sport, but also very collaborative, just like art. You see your friend trying something, or doing something a certain way, and suddenly something is sparked in your mind, like, "Oh, I can build off that!" We have some very talented friends, and love that we can show off their art with our boards.

The Heavy Pile comes with a custom Goldcoast hair
pick, oh ya!
BNQT - ONE GOLDCOAST BOARD IMMEDIATELY STANDS OUT TO ME - THE HEAVY PILE. IS SHAG CARPET THE NEW BLACK? WILL THE INCLUDED HAIR PICK HELP US WITH THE LADIES?
Chris - Haha! Yeah, The Heavy Pile is hard to miss. We can only hope that shag carpet becomes the new black. I think most products can be improved by a liberal application of shag. The hair pick could be a killer icebreaker, "Hey baby, cruise down to the beach with me. Here, let me just fluff up the shag on my Heavy Pile so the ride will be extra comfy!" It's pretty much a lock from there.
