This has damn near nothing to do with skateboarding that I can discern but... what the hell. Stacy Peralta is getting all kinds of press this week for his new gang life documentary Made in America as Sundance starts gearing up. A Crips and Bloods doc is a pretty bold step, following up on his work on Dogtown and Z Boys, Riding Giants (great films, both), and Bones Brigade gems like Search for Animal Chin. Peralta approaches dangerous territory in some recent interviews I've seen as wide-eyed white guy peering in on gang culture, but I also get the sense that his skate background and the street cred he earned from handling the Z Boys story so well may have actually helped him out with this project. At any rate, Peralta's turning out to be a great filmmaker – recall that Dogtown won both the Audience and Best Documentary Awards at Sundance in 2001 – and I'm curious to see Made in America.
