The winter contest scene has been a whirlwind of record breaking, first-ever's, heavy riding of epic proportions. This past Saturday, Mt. High hosted the $20,000 Cholula Triple Air Show that was proudly advertised as the largest prize purse in Southern California. After fourteen successful years, many have raved about this year's course being the best it's ever been.
Sunny skies and mild temperatures made for a perfect day of boarding and riders like Yale Cousino, Scotty Vine, Ian Thorley showed up to lay it all down, but it was local Mt. High team rider, Spencer Link who stomped the competition with his Cab 9, Front 7 and a nasty Back 10 Double to claim the $5000 top prize.
The women's snowboard division had a pool of talent with riders like Lynn Neil, Mariah Dugan, Nirvana Ortanez, Jamie Madrid and Melissa Evans. However, it was Salt Lake City rider Katie Williams who topped the podium with a smooth run that included a clean front 5 on the money booter and a cool $2000 in prize money.
McRae Williams snagged the $3500 top prize in the ski division with his smooth run that had the dirtiest double that day.
To make this year's Cholula Triple Air Show even more legit, its rating was upgraded to a 3 star TTR (Ticket To Ride) event which means riders were able to earn points toward their overall worldwide ranking. Which basically means snowboarders got a chance to earn points towards rankings that could enable them to enter events like the Grand Prix and the Olympics.
Special thanks goes out to the event's sponsors, Cholula Hot Sauce, Jarritos, Continuous, and more. And to Chuck Allen, the Godfather of snowboarding and co-founder of the USASA, without whom this event would not exist.
