The Globe Pro Fiji wrapped up this afternoon, and Kelly Slater carried the day, meaning he’s won three of four on the year and built himself a formidable lead in his chase for a ninth world title.Â
Slater knocked off two Hobgoods on his way to the title, meeting the resurgent CJ in the finals, for his 37th win on the career. He combo-ed CJ early on in the finals and proceeded to, if I may be polite about it, demolish Hobgood for the next 30 minutes.Â
Earlier in the day the quarterfinals were packed with last second upsets and surprises, perhaps the least expected/most devastating being Adriano de Souza ousting second-ranked Joel Parkinson in the waning seconds of their heat.Â
On the whole it was a good contest for those atop the rankings, with most of the top ten solidifying their standings there. One exception was Andy Irons, who was bounced in Round 3.Â
Slater went through Occy, Damien Hobgood, Bobby Martinez, Taj Burrow and CJ on his way to the title. From here, the WCT heads to J-Bay, where Slater will have a 900+ point lead in the standings. For the record, CJ Hobgood was the pick of BNQT.com
