Surfing icon Rob Machado's acclaimed film Melali: The Drifter Sessions will be premiering in Orange County on Friday, Nov. 19 at Hurley Headquarters.
Centered on the best surf sessions from his award-winning movie, The Drifter, Melali offers a unique twist on the surf film experience. With a nod to the classics from the Bruce Brown era, the audience will witness Machado and his band score the movie live. "I always heard how cool it was to watch a surf movie as a band played to it," says Machado of the 60s era. "Melali seemed like the perfect movie to bring it back."
Over the past couple of months, Machado and the Drifter Sessions band featuring Jon Swift, Todd Hannigan and Fernando Apodaca have been doing just that, playing their cruisy but powerful set at a few select locations to rave reviews. The one-time event at Hurley HQ, which will also have free food and drink on offer, will kick-start a larger Melali tour in Spring 2011.
Along with Machado, the movie features Dane Reynolds, Kelly Slater, Kalani Robb, Dan Malloy, Mike Losness, Shane Dorian, Marlon Gerber and Rizal Tanjung in everything from playful beachbreaks to draining 8-foot barrels.
"This is more of a pure surf film," says Machado. "We had so many great sessions during that year-long period filming The Drifter, we could have made a few movies out of it. Melali represents the best of them."
