Pro File: Trouble Andrew
Trevor "Trouble" Andrew is on the loose again with the release of his latest video "I'm Wasted." Being a pro snowboarder and touring rock star no doubt have provided the inspiration for his lyrics which shine a light on the dark underbelly of the party-boy lifestyle. Trouble took some time out of his hectic schedule to give us the a sober assessment on his latest creative effort.
The Trouble Gang Mixed tape is now released - how does it feel to have the new album out and where can people get it/hear it?
I'm stoked to have something new out again. It was a fun process working on this project because I never really worked with too many artists or producers. I normally stay in my lane, write/produce my music with the Trouble sound in mind then write my lyrics and melody based off of that. This was a bit different cause I was creating tracks or picking beats with other people in mind, which was refreshing cause I stepped out side of my comfort zone. It was also rad to vibe off of other people s energy and push each other, kinda like how your friends in the sk8park or MTN riding push you but this was in the studio. It all happened organically, I had been working on my new Trouble Andrew album "Dreams of a Troubled Man" and the Trouble Gang Mixtape just happened at the same time. Creating music is usually a really private process for me but it was rad to have my people come in the studio and grind it out. It taught me a lot about how other people work.
What was the inspiration to put the Mix Tape album together?
I'm a fan of all kinds of music and I love how mixtapes can me loose and not have to follow a story or sound. I have so many creative friends so it was amazing to bring everyone out of their element a bit and see what happened when we all worked together. There were no guidelines to follow.
You have a huge list of collaborators including Lil John, Santigold, Ninjasoik and others, how did you go about picking everyone and was it hard to get them all together?
Nah, that's how Trouble gang does it! Everyone involved is someone I really kick it with and that supports my movement, so everyone really came through just outa love.
Of the new tracks on the album, which are your favorites?
That's a tough one but I would have to say "Wasted" featuring. Spankrock, Mr. Move, Lil Jon. "Fly so high" featuring Currensy, Stunnaman, "Hide" featuring. Amanda Blank, and "Dream on" featuring Jofo.
You're currently on tour how's it going and who's on the road with you?
The road has been great. Full USA tour west to the east to the south. Just Played SF, Reno, Portland, Seattle and its been packed out so I can't complain.
Since the release of your first songs a few years ago, you've toured extensively and played venue's big and small, is life as a musician and artist everything it's cracked up to be?
I'm not sure what its cracked up to be? I mean, its definitely a grind but you get back what you put in. Anything you want to be great at takes a lot of love, blood, sweat and tears to win and see results. I like the creative part of being an artist the most. I love to release new music and hear people s reactions. It s kinda like releasing your new shred video part for the season. Shows are rad too cause it s all on the moment, same kinda pressure as contests, which I also enjoy. There's good and bad days with anything but I would have to say I been really fortunate to be successful doing work that I love.
How was your season? Did you get much snowboarding in?
Not as much as I wanted but we did a Trouble on the MTN tour, played Winter X Games, shred towns, Olympics etc, So I rode a lot with my crew teaching them how to ride which was amazing! I love to how people get so stoked when they figure it out, I missed that. I had a few pow days with the boys back in Whistler as well. Look out the new YES movie though, I m trying get some days in with them this season and see what comes out of it.
Are you still living in NYC and do you ever miss living in a mountain town?
Yeah, I live in Bed Sty Brooklyn with my girl. I really miss the mountains and how healing they feel to me. I always make a few trips to my crib out west to balance out the city life.
You've have a unique style of dress, where do you acquire all the clothes/accessories you're known for?
Everywhere! I'm a pack rat, I'm always looking for unique things. But usually old Thrift stores, yard sales swap meets, ebay, the hood.
Of course one of your collaborators on this album is your right hand lady, Santigold, how is it balancing your relationship, her success, you success and all the craziness inherent in your mutually hectic lifestyles?
For us, it makes it easier that we both can relate and understand the ups and downs with our work life because we both are living similar lifestyles. For the most part we leave our work at work and just enjoy each other at home. I'm a lucky man.
What's the future hold for Trouble and any thanks?
I will cross that bridge when I get there. I live day by day but you can expect the new Trouble Andrew "Dreams of a Troubled Man" record in the near future. Also putting out the Trouble Gang Mixtape vol2 soon. Big thanks to the whole Trouble Gang and everyone who supports me. Big ups to Santi, my family and my band (Joao Salamao, Ian Longwell, Masa Tataku), management and Rob&Alex at Virgin records. Big ups to all my sponsors: Analog, Nixon, Airhole, YES and all the artists I worked with this year!
