The Window on the Hurley Pro down at Lowers opens up tomorrow, and historic it will be, for the prize purse will be $400,000. The winner's cut of that will amount to $100,000, which is the largest-ever prize on the WCT and is precisely $20,000 less than what the winner of the next LPGA event will make. But so it goes, I guess. These men don't do it for the money. Fuck no, they do it for the prestige and for the love of surfing. The prize money and the rankings have nothing to do whatsoever with the reasons that Bret Simpson and Damien Hobgood are up at the butt-crack of dawn to practice on two-footers.
