Ok, so it's not really about snowboarding, in fact, it has no direct link to 'boarding for any of the general audience of the IFC Network's new show, Portlandia. But Portland, Oregon is a city that is seeped in snowboarding culture: Bonfire/Salomon, Holden, YoBeat, Cobra Dogs, Wille Yli-Luoma's Heart Roasters, tons of dirtbag snowboarders who roam the streets between Portland and Meadows in the winter and Portland and Timberline in the summer, up and coming pros, existing pros, former pros...the list of companies, people, and outlandish moments that make Portland one of the hubs of the snowboard community could go on and on. And, for anyone who has spent time in this city and partaken in the cheap happy hours, the Rainier-fueled nights at spots like the Sandy Hut, and the fantastic people-watching in any of the city's quadrants, the hyperbolic representation of the city as viewed through skits featuring Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein will at once make you laugh uproariously and feel a bit of nostalgia for the people and places of the city, even if you currently live there. At its best, Portlandia creates a laughing-with-you spoof on the current state of the hipster/foodie/indie/etc 20- and 30-somethings, typified by the antics of Portland. The perfect show to watch after a long day of shredding, with a PBR in one hand, and a bowl of local, organic chicken curry (or anything similar) in the other.
