It was a special “retro†event celebrating 40 years of motocross racing. A lot of riders wore retro motocross gear from the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. Spectators attending the race also wore vintage clothing and t-shirts. And some of the bikes actually had graphics kits from those eras as well. The weather was nice sunny and hot, and for the first time in many years it did not rain! It was a really fun day and a good time was had by all.
250 Moto 1
Rounding the first big right hand turn in 250 Moto 1 was Muscle Milk/MDK/KTM rider Martin Davalos. That holeshot position was short lived as Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider Christophe Pourcel quickly made his way around Davalos. Pourcel’s teammate Jake Weimer and Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki rider Ryan Dungey also made their way around Davalos soon after trying to run down Pourcel who in a short time had pulled away from them with a huge lead. Pourcel would go on to win the moto easily.
Dungey would eventually make his way around Weimer and take the second spot by the end of the moto. Weimer would take the third spot. Geico/Powersports/Honda rider Brett Metcalfe would finish fourth and rounding out the top five was Metcalfe’s teammate Blake Wharton.
250 Moto 2
Pourcel wasted no time in 250 Moto 2 getting the holeshot and quickly started checking out away from everyone else. He really had this Unadilla Track dialed. But the real battle for position was behind Pourcel. Weimer would again find himself in the second spot followed closely by Blake Wharton. Monster Energy Pro Circuit rider Austin Stroupe, Wharton’s teammate Justin Barcia and Dungey were battling right behind him. Wharton would make a mistake and go down briefly.
Once again Dungey rode hard and made his way around Weimer but by that time the leader of the race Pourcel was long gone.
Pourcel took the win in Moto 2 and the overall for the day.
Dungey would take the second spot and second overall and Weimer would take the final podium spot and overall third overall for the day.
Brett Metcalfe would fight his way to fourth and take fourth overall. Division 7/Star Racings/Yamaha rider Broc Tickle would finish the moto in fifth and take fifth overall for the day despite finishing ninth in Moto 1
Pourcel and Dungey came into the Unadilla Race tied in points but with Pourcel’s 1-1 finish he leaves with a six point lead in the championship race with three races left in the season.
Pourcel has 387 points to Dungeys 381.
They will all do battle again next Saturday afternoon, August 22 at Budd’s Creek MX Park in Mechanicsville, MD.
