Podium - Dungey, Towney, MetfalfeRound five of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship was held for the first time in two years during the day in Lakewood, CO. The past two years the track decided to hold the race at night for something different.
The day started off nice warm and sunny but as the day progressed the skies turned threatening at times but the rain did hold off until after the races but just barely!
Moto one would see hometown hero Honda Red Bull Racings Andrew Short pull the holeshot and immediately start to pull away from the rest of the pack.
Into the second spot quickly was series points leader Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider Ryan Dungey. Following closely behind and putting pressure on Dungey was JGR/Muscle Milk/Toyota rider Josh Grant.
Short would go down on lap five handing the lead to Dungey. But only two laps later, Grant who had found some great lines, passed Dungey for the lead.
Dungey gave chase and did not give up but was unable to reel Grant in.
Grant would go on to win moto one with Dungey taking second.
Putting in an amazing ride for the third spot was Rockstar Energy Suzuki rider Tommy Hahn who had started in the 11th position and charged all the way to third!
Rounding out the top five in moto one was Geico Powersports Honda rider Brett Metcalf in fourth and Valli Motosports Yamaha s Kyle Cunningham in
fifth.
Moto two would see Andrew Short pulling another great holeshot with Dungey once again hot in pursuit. This time around lap three Dungey would make a clean pass, pull away and go unchallenged for the moto win and overall victory to stand on top of the podium once again.
TLD/Lucas Oil Honda s Ben Townley, who finished sixth in moto one, also would get around Short and finish second in the moto and take second overall for the day and stand on the podium for the first time this year.
Short and Metcalfe would battle back and forth for the third spot with Short prevailing by motos end and finish with a fifth overall for the day. Metcalfe would take the fourth postion in moto two but finish on the podium with third overallfor the day.
Rounding out the top five in moto two was Jagermeister/FMF KTM rider Mike Alessi.
So the top five overalls for the day would be Dungey, Townley, Metcalfe, Grant and Short.
Moto one winner Josh Grant would be involved in a big first turn pileup putting him in the last spot in the beginning of the moto. But Josh charged forward the whole race finishing 10th in moto two and because of his outstanding effort would finish fourth overall for the day.
After five rounds Dungey has an amazing 51 point lead in the series with 7 races to go and this was his fourth straight overall victory.
