This week Mercedes is celebrating the 30th anniversary of their Gelandewagen - or more simply known as the G Wagen. The truck has been the preferred mode of transport for drug dealers, rappers, snobby housewives with poor taste and foreign heads of state.
Don't let the wonky clientele fool you, these boxy trucks are incredibly capable on and off road. Most are hand made in their own factory in Austria (hence the 6-figure price tag) and are built to specifications that put them in a league of their own.
Now that you've got some insight lets get to the point of this post - and that is the beast in the photo up top. This is the Brabus version of the G-Wagen. German super-tuner Brabus has been the leading Mercedes tuning shop for as long as the G Wagen has been around. Their team starts with a standard AMG engine and tunes it to the point that it's no longer a Mercedes, and therefore Brabus is actually considered its own auto company and not merely a tuning shop.
They took a stock 30th anniversary G Wagen and added a 730 horsepower biturbo engine that puts out nearly a grand of torque. It's the most powerful street legal SUV ever built. In true Brabus fashion they didn't stop at the engine. The interior features custom Brabus seats and instrumentation while the outside has new rims, door sills and just about everything short of a new body and chassis.
