Mike Losness has spent the last three months surfing in Bali, California and Barbados with a filmer collecting video footage for Taylor Steele's new surf movie concept Innersection. www.innersection.tv is a website where surfers can upload their own 2-3 minute movie of themselves surfing and hope to be voted by the public into the next Taylor Steele surf film. I caught up with mike to ask him a few questions about his path the last few months while filming.
When did you decide you were going to take Innersection seriously and what motivated you to start filming?
I guess in the middle of January I decided I wanted to start filming and go from there. If I started getting some good waves on film I would get more involved. I planned a trip to bali and hired a filmer over there to follow me around. He filmed me every time I surfed and he got some great footage. I knew a lot of people would go check out everyones videos at the Innersection website and I saw it as a good platform for me to show my surfing talent to the masses. After Bali I was all in.

Did you do any other trips after Bali to get more footage?
Yeah, about a week after I got home from Bali Surfing Magazine called me up to go down to Barbados. Yadin Nicols came along and brought Tom Aiello the Hurley filmer so I was able to get some more footage down there at soup bowls and another left not far from there. The waves were sick and it was my first time to Barbados. I loved it and can't wait to go back.

Your section has more than just a bunch of good waves and an amping song like most of the sections in past Taylor Steele movies. It has a story line and a concept. Can you tell me a little more about insurfnia?
Innersection was telling surfers to do more than just put a bunch of clips together. They wanted to see more than that. I started to think about what surfing is to me. How important it is and how I'm obsessed. It was clear to me that thinking about surfing would be my idea and I came up with Insurfnia. Insurfnia is a made up disease I think all surfers share. We obsess over surfing and often times cant get it out of our mind. Usually it intensifies at night before bed or we even dream about surfing. That is how the Insurfnia idea came about.
My editor Tom Aiello did an awesome job with our lifestyle shoot and brought Insurfnia to life in the edit.
Tell me about the process of being your own producer and having to make this section. Was it a hassle or was it fun to do or both?
In the beginning I saw it as a hassle. Mostly because I have never had to organize filmers, music, editors, shooting schedules, shot lists etc. It seemed like a big task but as I started filming and doing everything it was really fun. It was really cool to have an idea, make it into a goal and in the end have a finished product. I enjoyed it for sure.
The editing of Tom Aiello is a step beyond anything we've seen in independent surf cinematography.
So now all people have to do is watch your video and vote. How do they do that?
You just have to go to the website www.innersection.tv become a member and login. Then search for my video with my name Mike Losness. My goal is the top ten but If I can get enough votes to make the top 5 I would be so stoked. I hope everyone enjoys my video.
You have to wonder what the motel manager was thinking when he saw the crew lock themselves in this room for
the afternoon.
Editor's Note: I have been to the Innersection website today and viewed all of the video entries. Insurfnia is, in my own opinion, one of the most progressive surf video parts I have ever seen. Everything from concept, to music to editing to surfing is in a league of it's own. If you agree click here, register and vote for Insurfnia.
