The best Halloween party I ever made it to was at Fight Club (RIP) in Washington, DC, two years ago (you weren't supposed to talk about Fight Club, but I think it's safe now that it's dead and gone). I skated in a full tux, dressed as Steve Zissou from the Life Aquatic. Jesus was there too, skating the bowl in a crown of thorns with a big wooden cross slung over his shoulder. I drove home from that party soaked in beer, smelling like campfire and second-hand marijuana, thinking for sure I'd get pulled over at the notorious sobriety checkpoint in Adams Morgan and give them a surprise by breathing the cleanest breath on record -- the only thing better than a BFF on Halloween is a DDFL: Designated Driver For Life.
Anyway, my point is this: Skateboarding and Halloween go together like peanut butter and chocolate. As sure as you're going to eat yourself sick on Reeces' Cups tonight, you'd better also make it out the skatepark in costume (see Spider-Hawk footage from the old Vans Skatepark (RIP) in Woodbridge, VA below). Following: A list of things to do today.
1. You can't do better than this Halloween party at the Skatepark of Tampa, paired with an art show and deck release by Todd Bratrud.
2. Hook up your very own Ryan Sheckler Life of Ryan costume with the handy Live Like Ryan catalog at CCS.
3. Habitat premiers its new Inhabitants video tonight in Cincinnati, with a costume contest and drinks courtesy of DC Shoes. (Trailer below)
4. Skull Skates has been keeping Canadian skaters on a Halloween tip all year round since 1978, and now has a new holiday China Creeps deck, commemorating both the old, old school (1981) China Creek Skatepark in Vancouver and the aptly named local skate punk band China Creeps (concert footage below).
5. Hubba Wheels doesn't really have anything special going on for Halloween. I just wanted to use the pervy Little Red Riding Hood ad to help generate some more traffic. Still, go check out their notorious ads if you're after more women in various stages of costume and undress. No wonder they sell so many skateboard wheels!
6. South of the North tipped us off to this limited edition of 666 Bladerhater decks from Creature, the good people who scalped Omar Hassan at the Vans Downtown Showdown and who -- as recently as yesterday -- were out saving souls at the skatepark through the Save a Life Rehabilitation Program by accepting Razor scooters in exchange for new complete Creature setups.
7. The Denver Skateshop is having a sale on anything orange, black, or with skulls on it. Is there ANYTHING for sale in a skateshop that isn't either black or has some skulls on it? No. It's a big sale. Lots of spooky decks from Zorlac, Creature, Conspiracy, Bacon...Go get some online.
8. I forget what 8 was for.
9. Pumpkin Skateboards is a Swiss slalom company. I wouldn't mention it any other day of the year, but there it is.
10. The Simpsons' Tree House of Horror XVIII is on Fox on November 4. Now THAT'S spooky. The Simpsons has been on for 18 years? I'm feeling so old right now.
11. Bob Medina was one of my skate/punk heroes when I was growing up in Colorado. Now he does a lot of Day of the Dead artwork. This is the one you want to buy.
12. You know those Scared Straight videos? Well, if you or someone you know decides to sober up starting tomorrow, right after that Skatepark of Tampa party, check out That's Life -- the new Duane Peters documentary -- for inspiration. I get scared just riding on the big 'ol Black Label DP Emergency wheels I have on my pool board. Hardcore skating, hardcore music, and hardcore sobering up. Trailer below.
13. Send this link to everyone you know, because October was the biggest month ever for this blog and for BNQT as a whole and I want to go out with a bang. Thanks! Happy Halloween!
