Chase Webb won the skate park competition and Sammy Schoonderwoerd won the skate vert contest Sunday at the Gatorade Free Flow Tour’s stop in Encinitas, Calif. out of 64 competitors.

Fourteen-year-old Webb from Murrieta, Calif. earned the skate park victory at the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA after executing a kickflip front board and a tre flip down the six stair during the final jam session. Brandon Villanueva was second and AJ Comeau finished in third place.

Webb is a two-time finalist on the Gatorade Free Flow Tour, also winning the Reno, Nev. event in 2008.

“I can’t wait to back to SLC for the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals,†Webb said. “I had so much fun last year.â€Â
In front of a crowd that included professional vert skaters Adam Taylor, Jean Postec and Danny Mayer, 13-year-old Schoonderwoerd from Carlsbad, Calif. used technical tricks like a McTwist and a kickflip indy to secure the win in the skate vert contest. Joey Hamlisch took second place, while Tom Schaar rounded out the top three.

“It feels really good to win on the Gatorade Free Flow Tour,†Schoonderwoerd said. “The Finals are going to be so fun!â€Â

Also in attendance at Sunday’s contest were former Gatorade Free Flow Tour winners Zach Miller, Josh Stafford and Paul-Luc Ronchetti, the 2008 Gatorade Free Flow Tour skate vert champion.

“It looked sketchy from the start due to the rainy beginning,†Ecke YMCA park manager, Heather Randant said. “Thankfully, that all cleared up. Lots of local skaters came out and put on an awesome contest.â€Â

With the win, both Webb and Schoonderwoerd earn an automatic bid into the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals that will take place at the Dew Tour’s Toyota Challenge, September 17-20, 2009.

Down the road in Newnan, Georgia, Phil Hansen won the skate park competition and Clay Kreiner won the skate vert contest.

Twelve-year-old Hansen from Denver, CO earned the skate park victory at Factory Skatepark after executing a 360 flip to boardslide and a 50-50 to kickflip during the final jam session. Dakota Welty was second and Hayden Victer finished in third place.

“It was a great contest,†Hansen said. “I really like Gatorade and the Free Flow Tour! Everyone I competed with was super nice, even to the little kids like myself.â€Â

In the skate vert contest, 12-year-old Kreiner used technical tricks like a McTwist and backside ollies to secure the win. Austin Gordon took second place, while Jimmy Wilkins rounded out the top three.

“Today’s competition went really smoothly,†Factory owner, Dean O’Reilly said. “It’s always great to know we’re giving someone a chance to take their riding to the next level.â€Â

The 2009 Gatorade Free Flow Tour will include a total of 33 skateboarding competitions (five skate vert and 28 skate park) and 20 BMX contests (four BMX vert and 16 BMX park) at 33 parks across the United States. The winners in each of the 53 skate and BMX competitions will be flown to the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals, taking place at the Dew Tour’s Toyota Challenge, September 17-20. Encompassing the “Flow to Pro†theme that is the cornerstone of the Gatorade Free Flow Tour, the two overall skate and BMX park champions and the two overall skate and BMX vert champions earn a spot to compete against the pros at the final stop of the Dew Tour, the PlayStation® Pro in Orlando, Fla., October 15-18.
