Hawaiian surfer dating back to 1890

This thursday auctioneers will be selling 100 old photographs taken in both Fiji and Hawaii. While all of the photos are awesome, the one that caught our eye was the photo of a native hawaiian surfer. Dating back to 1890 this is perhaps the first photo ever taken of a surfer. An article on the website Daily Mail quotes Chris Albury of Dominic Winter Auctions, '[The surfer] is pictured standing in the water holding the board behind him and wearing a traditional loin cloth. 'Surfing had been largely stamped out by missionaries who arrived in Hawaii after Captain Cook discovered it. They thought it ungodly, but it survived, and this photograph shows the traditional way they surfed.' To read the full article or to see more photo click here
