Neil at SkateAndAnnoy is up this week with the latest installment of his eBay Watch column, which I continue to be fascinated by. Somebody got a hell of a score this month: The Black Flag pictured deck above went for $1,525 in February. It was apparently from Steve Caballero's collection, and if I were him I would have held on to it for the Raymond Pettibon graphics: You can't put a dollar value on punk points like this.
Anyway, check it out: Even if you're not in the market for buying or selling old skateboards, Neil does a great job laying out the history and historical significance of these decks, and he's in as much wide-eyed wonder as you will be at the fact that they're getting snapped up as quickly as they are. This month's column has boards from as far back as the 1960s, plus one of my favorite Natas decks. You know, it actually did occur to me back in 1988 that something like that Natas deck was so rad it might be worth not skating and hanging on to for posterity but... nope, I skated the hell out of mine anyway. And that's the most fascinating thing about the eBay Watch column: Who were these poseurs who were buying good wood and then letting it just sit around? I did right by my skateboards by properly putting them to their purpose.
