Amateurs Will Compete on Winter Dew Tour Courses
This Weekend at Snowbasin Resort
The top amateurs in the nation have their eyes set on the last Gatorade Free Flow stop at Snowbasin, Utah on Wednesday. This will be their last shot to earn a spot on the roster to compete Saturday and Sunday on the Winter Dew Tour courses. Seven Springs in Pennsylvania held a two-day competition for slopestyle and superpipe disciplines where Adam Giola and Shannon Branthoover dominated the competition in a field of almost forty snowboarders. Will Hibbs made his third trip to the Gatorade Free Flow Tour finals, claiming a spot in the men's ski slope and earning a ticket to Utah.
The blue bird skies, freshly cut pipe and about 8" of fresh snow set the scene for an excellent day of competition. Branthoover claimed a spot in both the slope and superpipe events. Adam Hohmeyer advanced to the men's snowboard final with a run that started with a big 900 tail, into a 540, followed by stale and method grabs, finishing with a720 on his last hit and Cody Buchalter will represent the freeskiers.
Sierra at Tahoe, a second year host resort, pulled nearly 100 young riders and skiers from as far as Russia to compete at the final west coast stop of the Gatorade Free Flow Tour. The course best showcased the skills of Armeen Pirooz, a snowboarder out of Virginia, Mammoth Lake’s Kelly Burger, and freeskier Max Szekely out of Truckee, and the trio will make their way to Utah this week for the Finals, where they’ll compete on the same course as the professionals at the Toyota Championship.
With the win, the eight snowboarders and four freeskiers earn a prequalified spot in the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals, taking place this weekend, Feb. 9-12. The event will be held in conjunction with the Winter Dew Tour’s final stop of the season, the Toyota Championships, where overall Champions will be crowed and earn a spot in the first stop of the 2012-13 Winter Dew Tour.
