The second stop of the 2012 Dew Tour comes to San Francisco this weekend for the Toyota City Championships. Updates include a skateboard and BMX "streetstyle" discipline, integrating authentic street features on a closed course on Harrison St. downtown.
San Francisco has long been a bastion for skateboarding and bike culture with its famed embarcadero waterfront and steep hills. Showcasing the city's unique character was important for the athletes.
“They did a great job designing the course,” says BMX competitor Chad Kerley. “You look at it and you want to ride it right then and there, and the new streetstyle event really represents the origin of San Francisco riding.”
The Dew Tour, now in its eighth year continues to evolve. Launched in 2005 as a five-stop summer series consisting of skate, BMX and FMX disciplines, it expanded in 2009, adding three winter events with snowboarding and freeskiing.
In 2012 tour owners Alli Sports, a division of NBC, renewed with founding partner Mountain Dew, extending the series four years with a focus on fewer, bigger events at marquee destinations with expanded network coverage (NBC LIVE - Sat 1:30pm ET / Sun 2p ET).
“It’s a natural progression to make this Dew Tour bigger and better in San Francisco. The city is so amazing and has so much skate history so I’m really excited to compete at this Dew Tour stop,” says pro skateboarder Paul Rodriguez.
Here are more details from the folks at Alli:
