If the downer druggie descent into madness part with Jay Adams in Dogtown: The Legend of Z Boys and the downer druggie descent into madness part of Rising Son: The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi or the downer druggie descent into madness parts of Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator or Who Cares? The Duane Peters Story weren't enough to scare you or some intervention-needing friend of yours straight, check out this documentary flick now making the rounds on the film festival circuit: Death Or Prison Eventually.
D.O.P.E. follows the character and career arcs of skateboard pioneer slash downer-druggie-descent-into-madness dudes Bruce Logan, Jay Adams, Dennis Martinez, and Christian Hosoi as each climbs to fame in professional skateboarding, burns the candle at both ends, flames out spectacularly, then struggles to put it all back together in the aftermath. Jay Adams' and Christian Hosoi's stories are pretty well known, but in context and in conversation together the stories of all four guys are pretty powerful, and finding out what became of Martinez is downright inspirational (less so for Bruce Logan and Jay Adams, though the flick tries to end on hopeful notes for each of them, reporting from under a bridge where Bruce Logan was living at the time and from the prison where Jay Adams is finishing up a 4 year stint).
