Pat Laughlin isn't your typical BMX rider. Born and bred in Philadelphia but claiming the Jersey Shore as home, Pat aka Bid Daddy, is an iconic personality among the character-laden list of action sports mic men.
This year at Dew Tour Ball Park teamed up with Big Daddy to capture some behind the scenes comic relief with Pat at the helm, so we thought it appropriate to get a bit of insight from this BMX insider.
How did you get the name Big Daddy?
As i was coming up in the BMX world, I got a chance to be on the MTV show in 2002 that everyone from my high school watched. Once when i was riding in the show, I fell and got up and was saying "Daddy" all day, so my friends started calling me Big Daddy and it stuck.
Then a few years later I made a YouTube show called Daddy Vision, which soon became the most-watched show in the BMX world - even with people who didn't ride BMX - their friends and family members started watching it too. The name Big Daddy turned me into a father figure towards the kids as well getting on their level by talking to them and having fun with people.
What do you love about BMX?
I love BMX so much because when I was younger, I was bad at most sports because I have ADD really bad I could not pay attention. All I've ever wanted to do is get away from all the things in life that I failed at, and the only escape was being in the air.
For someone with a mindset like myself, I love being around my friends and being crazy, ball-busting jocks, smack talking, and all that good stuff. It has made me lots of friends, which I never had as a kid. BMX and everyone in BMX are my true family and friends - my family most of all. Big Daddy aka Heavy Hitter has nothing but love for everyone looking to ride BMX have a good laugh.
Why is it fun to prank other athletes?
People in action sports are too serious, so I try to make people laugh so they can have fun and not worry about being the best rider there. I also do it to have fun. No one really talks or ball busts, but I do. They have fun breaking my stones too for making fun of haters.
How have athletes responded to getting pranked?
They love it and get involved fast. It brings out the side of the athletes that most people don't get to see - the real reality of the sport behind the scenes.
