I first heard of the Autumn Bowl when it was the Tylenol Bowl. Before the sponsorship ended, but after the reality tv series. A friend described it to me, and the description of this mysterious bowl right off the beaten path of the Manhattan commuter/socialite/city dweller, hidden in a warehouse from anyone that wasn't particularly interested in knowing about it, was so enticing to me--like an elusive creature that a sportsman hunts for without reward--I wanted to skate this bowl so badly. I hardly ever made it to the city at that point, so it was that much more out of reach. I started hearing more and more stories about skate sessions at the bowl and over time the pedestal that the Autumn Bowl rested on in my imagination grew larger and larger.
About two years ago, I started having to go to NYC more often for work, but each trip we just happened to run out of time before we were able to cross the bridge to Brooklyn. Skating there was just out of my grasp until a year ago, when I finally got the opportunity to go to the bowl; some friends wanted to go to the First Annual Brooklyn Motorcycle Show, which hosted a sweet metal show on the deck of the bowl, too. It was an awesome night. I felt totally welcome skating amidst a group of gnarly New York skaters and the bowl was just as fun as I imagined. I emerged with the gnarliest black lung I have ever had, due to the copious amount of dust and pigeon excrement in the building, but it was all worth it. That place is fun.
So, even though I have only skated it once, it's definitely a place that remains high on my list of spots. Today I was sent a surprising ebay listing--for the bowl. It appears it has to be out of its building by the end of August and is looking for a new owner and new home. Bummer. Here's to hoping that it isn't lost come the end of the month.
If you have 15,000 you're itching to spend, you can buy the bowl here.
