Tyler De Martini suffered severe head trauma and
died Wednesday night after being hit by a Prius
while skateboarding in the street.
Devastating news about an 18-year-old Berkeley, Calif. man who passed away Wednesday afternoon after suffering critical head injuries when he was hit by a car on Marin Ave. while skateboarding. The accident occurred at 7 p.m. Monday night when Tyler De Martini was skating at night when a Prius going eastbound hit him. De Martini was not wearing a helmet and suffered a head injury that put him in a coma since the night of the accident.
"Members of BPD (Berkeley Police Department) extend their condolences to the De Martini family," police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss said in a news update. Many friends and family have been on hand for support since Monday night but according to family friend Gabe Scaglione, De Martini's tests for brain stem activity came back negative.
To add insult to injury, Sgt. Kusmiss shared some additional news that went something along the lines of how De Martini was skateboarding in the street, which means he was considered a pedestrian and the CA vehicle code states that "No pedestrian may walk upon any roadway outside of a business or residence district otherwise than close to his or her left-hand edge of the roadway."
De Martini was the second East Bay young man to die from a head injury caused by a skateboarding accident in the past week. On Sunday, Tucker Hacking, 20, of Walnut Creek died after a skateboard accident in Lafayette Friday. Hacking, who hit his head after falling from his board on a steep road, was not wearing a helmet, according to the Contra Costa Times.
