Permanent art on your skin…yep, tattoos. These days everyone’s got’em and skateboarders are far from an exception to that rule. And since skateboarding's graphic nature, from boards to shirts to logos galore, you better believe there are some company sanctioned tattoo logos that have made it into many a persons skin.
Here’s a breakdown of 10 of the most popular skate tattoos of all time. Or maybe just this time.
Crailtap Skull
It’s the skull that and crossbones that keeps getting more popular by the day. With two boards crossed behind it, it means a wee bit more than the traditional style of dead bones, and this one seems to be the crowd favorite as of late.
Santa Cruz Screaming Hand
The Jim Phillips drawn Screaming Hand from back in the day made a comeback over the past 5 years. The screaming hand is back, speaking volumes with just a single glance. Aggro, frustrated and screaming like a maniac coming at your face. This had a steady run through of getting inked on people back in the day and has since become a favorite amongst new grows who probably don’t know who Jim Phillips is.
Spitfire Head
The delinquent, precocious look on the Spifire “Fire Head” logo has long been a favorite tattoo of skaters around the world. It’s smiling, but it’s eyes say something else. Plus it’s made of fire. Fire burns. Get it? This thing’s on a tons of skaters everywhere. Why don’t you have one?
Independent Iron Cross Logo
The Independent Trucks “Iron Cross” logo could be the most popular skate tattoo of all time. Bold, down to business and meaning one thing…that’s you’re down with skateboarding…and hopefully Indy’s as well. It would seem weird to ride Thunder’s and have a visible Independent cross tatted on you, wouldn’t it?
Thrasher Sk8 Goat
The Thrasher Magazine “Skate Goat”, despite it’s menacing appeal, with it’s wheeled pentagram and goat head design, continues to grow as one of skateboarding's more popular tattooed logos. It’s evil in a tongue in cheek way and brings the “no regrets” mentality to life…in your skin, forever.
Piss Drunx
The original Piss Drunx was the exclusive, hard drinking, excess having crew made up of Jim Greco, Andrew Reynolds, Ali Boulala, Dustin Dollin and countless others. Their PD logo has been tatted on plenty of guys officially in the crew, but that hasn’t stopped countless fans getting the insignia drilled into various body parts for life. I guess anyone can be down these days.
Toy Machine
Ed Templeton and his Toy Machine brand have countless loyal followers, or pawns, as Ed would call them. A large assortment of Ed’s drawn characters have been permanently etched into the skin of TM fans around the world. Ed has made it a point to give a free board to any fan who shows him a Toy tattoo. Not a bad deal. Or is it?
Powell Ripper
It’s the gripping Ripper logo for Powell Peralta that was sketched by legendary graphics icon, VCJ, or Vernon Courtlandt Johnson. It speaks more to those with old school roots than any new jack looking to get a tattoo, but still looks rad anyway you want to get it drilled in.
Skate And Destroy
It’s the phrase and timeless font that’s as much a part of Thrasher Magazine’s heritage as their unmistakable logo. “Skate and Destroy” says it all by barely saying anything at all. It’s more powerful than any fast food slogan, a multi-million dollar ad agency could concoct. This thing must be tattooed on more people than it is screened on t-shirts in circulation.
Santa Cruz Slasher
The original logo was drawn up by Jim Phillips for an old Keith Meek graphic, coined the Slasher. The eye bulging crazed thing Indy Grabbing a bloodied Knife board has been etched into the skin of countless skateboarders for years. Where’s yours
